Owning a home is both a journey and an investment. When you own a home, there will always be something that needs to get done. The roofing on your house protects your investment, your home from some of the more nefarious elements and nature’s finest creatures. Maintaining it should be one of your biggest priorities, as roofs are quite the investment. Our homeowner’s guide to roofing can help.
If you want to lengthen the life of your roof as much as possible (and truly, who wouldn’t?), there are a few steps to take to maintain the roof on your home before costly repairs or roof replacement is needed.
Our Guide to Roofing for Homeowners
1) Maintain your gutters
Clogged gutters cause problems. Take time seasonally to check for leaks, do repairs and of course clean them out.
2) Trim Branches That Are Close
Trim all tree branches and large shrubs. You do not want them rubbing on the edges of your roof or falling on top of it. Branches that hang over will also drip water and allow animals to cross.
3) Ventilate Your Attic
You do not want moisture to get trapped in your home. You should have proper ventilation and a proper way for air to flow in and out of your home. If you have a large home, you also need to have the correct number of vents. Two stories all need special ventilation.
4) Get a Professional Roof Inspection Yearly
If you truly want to take proper care of your home, you’ll have a roofing professional inspect yearly. This means attic spaces too. The process should be completed in about an hour and the inspector will need to inspect the inside and outside of your home.
Sometimes we ignore the little things for issues that appear much larger and more important. When it comes to your home, small issues are big issues waiting to happen. Fix the crack in the wall, switch out the leaky faucet and don’t let those loose shingles stay that way.
You Have Replaced Your Roof, Now What?
The good news is that as a homeowner, you’re set for the foreseeable future. Most roofing lasts 25 years or more. All you have to do is follow the steps above to keep it in great shape! If you follow this homeowner’s guide to roofing, rest assured that your roof will continue to protect your family and investment.
