5 Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Roofing Contractor

There are a lot of roofing contractors out there – all you have to do is a quick Google search. Unfortunately, not all contractors provide their customers with high-quality and excellent roofing services. Here are 5 questions to ask before hiring a roofing contractor.

1.) Do you Have a Current License?

This may seem like a very basic question. It is, but it is essential that you ask it.

If you interview a contractor who does not have a current license, you are opening yourself to a number of headaches.

It’s possible that your roof installation and repairs won’t follow industry-standards in terms of quality. Additionally, if a project goes awry, you expose yourself to financial losses – and who wants to pay to have the same thing done twice?

Nobody.

Be sure that any roofing contractor you hire has an updated and current license, always.

2.) Can you Provide Me with 3 Recommendations from Previous Clients?

Recommendations speak volumes to a contractor’s ability to not only provide the services they offer, but also to their communication with clients.

If a contractor provides excellent work, 9/10 times their former clients are more than happy to write them reviews online, or speak with you, a potential client.

If a contractor is unwilling to direct you to online reviews or provide you with recommendations, that is a huge red flag.

3.) What Warranties do Your Preferred Manufacturers Have?

Contractors often work with preferred manufacturers for supplies and materials. Roof installation and repairs are essentially a construction site – and things happen, like cracks in materials and wear-and-tear. Sometimes, supplies can be faulty.

Be sure to ask your contractor about warranties for the materials they use. This helps to protect your investment in the long-run.

4.) What Precautions Will Your Team Take to Avoid Damage to My Home During Installation and Repairs?

As a homeowner, installing a new roof, or having repairs done to your roof, is an investment.

When hiring a roofing contractor, you want to be sure that they’re going to protect all variables involved, including but not limited to your shingles, gutters, and skylights.

Asking about precautionary measures shows not only that you’re a very aware homeowner, but that you expect your contractor to care for your investment.

5.) Do you Guarantee Your Work?

If a roofing contractor can’t stand behind their work, you should walk away now. A roofing contractor should always guarantee their workmanship. Not only does this show credibility, but once again, it protects your investment. Guarantees also build trust, which is important when you have someone doing work on your home.
